*A CHANGE AND A PARTING My Story of Amana

Still, the stories and characters in this book continue to make that era come alive. - Lanny Haldy, executive director, Amana Heritage Society." *Humor FINDING MY WAY
$14.95
May navigates the issues she has faced during the first year. May's engaging tales include:
Life in her new family
The proposition from Gus, a Poodle lover
Dog park politics and May's way of coping
People who sleep with their dogs
May's photographic fashion portfolio
Laughter yoga for dogs, May's new career
A sampling of recipes for dog treats
May says...
Because my mother was a full-blooded Lab instead of a Doodle, and my dad was a Labradoodle (half Lab, half French Poodle) my siblings and I were rescued Labradoodle rejects. For this reason, I am offering sales of my autobiography, Finding My Way, to fundraising groups for shelters and institutions helpful to needy animals, particularly dogs. I am not intimately acquainted with cats.
When I was almost grown, a French poodle, Gus in Illinois, offered to woo me. I was seriously considering his offer. We exchanged photographs. Then Gus made a fatal mistake. He sent me photographs of octomom, Olive, nursing his puppies. I immediately scheduled a hysterectomy. I am certain many American women have had both experiences: an unfaithful mate and fixing.
Find out how I handle being rejected by the Weimaraners Syndicate and my next brave new career move. I offer my new book to you, size 6x9", 112 pages with 116 photographs, mostly in color. ISBN: 978-1932043617

Thank you so much for sending me copies of Finding My Way. I thought it was wonderful. It was nice to be introduced to May's friends. You can let May know that yes, Olive is allowed to sleep in the bed with her human sister Kayla and yes, Riley is allowed to sleep with her parents too. I'll be sure to share it with others.
Thank you again,
Robin (Octomom Olive's owner)
The first year for a dog is the most important to its development. "Finding My Way" is the charming story of May, a Labradoodle who joined a caring family. Written from the perspective of the dog, "Finding My Way" provides a charming story that readers will love and relish for hours. Enhanced with full color photos, "Finding My Way" is well worth the consideration.

*WOMEN 1957-1975
$25.00
Photographs by Joan Liffring-Zug
Now in a second printing in 2000, this book originally published in 1981 continues to give a look at some of the roles women traditionally filled in the decades after World War II. The photographer points out, "In the years these images were taken, very few middle-class women worked outside of their homes. The roles then assigned to women separated them from business, from politics and from each other."
Weston Naef, then assistant curator of photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, selected two of these images, Nan Wood Graham, Model for American Gothic, 1975, and Junior League Christmas Party, 1962 for the museum's photography collection.
Many of the images have gentle satire such as the Coe College Faculty Wives' Club with a painting of a semi-nude by Kunyioshi and disapproving members.
The photographer says, "During the years that I took these photographs, I did not realize how they documented the limited roles of women in that era. I wanted to explore their lives to see why my own life seemed so alienated and different from theirs in so many instances. With the birth of the women's movement in the 1960s, these photographs ultimately defined some of the social conditions of this era.
The photographs have been exhibited at the New York City Camera Club and in many galleries.

A COOK'S TOUR OF IOWA
$21.00
Bonnie's Zucchini Casserole
1 medium zucchini, sliced, parboiled, and drained
1 large whole tomato, diced
1/2 medium onion, chopped and sauteed in 1 tablespoon butter
1/2 green pepper, chopped
5 to 6 slices fried bacon, crumbled
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup buttered bread crumbs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a greased 1-quart casserole, spread alternate layers of zucchini, tomato, onion, green pepper, and bacon. Sprinkle with grated cheese and top with bread crumbs. Bake in preheated oven 20 minutes. Makes 4 servings.
Rhubarb Custard Pie
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup half-and-half
1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups chopped rhubarb
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix eggs and half-and-half. Add sugar, flour, salt, and rhubarb and mix thoroughly. Pour mixture into unbaked pie shell. Place pie in over and bake 15 minutes; lower heat to 350 degrees and bake 30 to 45 minutes longer, or until set. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
Lefse
5 well-packed cups riced potatoes
1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
Use Idaho russet potatoes. Boil, then mash and rice potatoes. Add margarine while potatoes are still warm. Cool until room temperature. Add powdered sugar, flour, and salt. Mix with your hands, knead well, and then roll into a log. Cut and measure into 1/3-cup portions and make a round ball of each portion. Press it down by hand and it will be easier to keep round while rolling out. Dust the large canvaslike cloth lefse "board" (or pastry board) with flour. Press dough down, turn over, and press down again. Roll as thinly as possible using a rolling pin with a pastry sleeve into 14-inch circles to fit the lefse grill. The secret of making thin lefse is using a covered rolling pin. For the last roll across the dough use a grooved lefse rolling pin, which marks the dough slightly and makes it thinner. Using a lefse stick, roll dough onto stick and transfer to hot lefse grill or griddle. You must use a lefse stick or holes will be made in the dough. (Some cooks use a thin spatula instead.) Bake a minute or two, then turn with lefse stick or spatula. Turn when lefse bubbles and brown spots appear. Fold each lefse into half or quarters. Cool between towels and store in plastic bag. Spread with butter to eat. Some people sprinkle the lefse with brown or white sugar and then roll it up. Makes about 18. A Bur Oak Book.

A PECULIAR PEOPLE Iowa's Old Order Amish An Expanded Edition
$19.95
Now back in print with a new essay, this classic of Iowa history focuses on the Old Order Amish Mennonites, the state's most distinctive religious minority. Sociologist Elmer Schwieder and historian Dorothy Schwieder began their research with the largest group of Old Order Amish in the state, the community near Kalona in Johnson and Washington counties, in April 1970; they extended their studies and friendships in later years to other Old Order settlements as well as the slightly less conservative Beachy Amish.
A Peculiar People explores the origin and growth of the Old Order Amish in Iowa, their religious practices, economic organization, family life, the formation of new communities, and the vital issue of education. Included also are appendixes giving the 1967 Act Relating to Compulsory School Attendance and Educational Standards; a sample Church Organization Financial Agreement, demonstrating the group's unusual but advantageous mutual financial system; and the 1632 Dortrecht Confession of Faith, whose eighteen articles cover all the basic religious tenets of the Old Order Amish.
Thomas Morain's new essay describes external and internal issues for the Iowa Amish from the 1970s to today. The growth of utopian Amish communities across the nation, changes in occupation (although The Amish Directory still lists buggy shop operators, wheelwrights, and one lone horse dentist), the current state of education and health care, and the conscious balance between modern and traditional ways are reflected in an essay that describes how the Old Order dedication to Gelassenheit the yielding of self to the interests of the larger community has served its members well into the twenty-first century.
Elmer Schwieder (1925-2005) was emeritus professor of sociology at Iowa State University. With Dorothy Schwieder he wrote Buxton: A Black Utopia in the Heartland. Dorothy Schwieder is emerita professor of history at Iowa State University and the author or coauthor of, among others, Iowa: The Middle Land and Growing Up with the Town: Family and Community on the Great Plains (Iowa, 2002). Thomas Morain is the author of, among others, Prairie Grass Roots: An Iowa Small Town in the Early Twentieth Century; formerly director of research and interpretation at Iowa's Living History Farms, he is currently director of community outreach at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

IOWA BIRDLIFE
$21.00
All my life I have been fascinated and thrilled by the nesting of birds, the songs, courtship rituals, nest building... In these spirited essays Gladys Black, dean of Iowa ornithologists, presents the results of years of painstaking observation of the haunts and habits of Iowa birds. By distilling her exacting fieldwork into the columns that held a devoted readership in the Des Moines Register from 1969 to 1987, she motivated a generation of birdwatchers to help preserve Iowa's endangered natural heritage. This expanded edition of her 1979 book reprints more than a hundred of her lively columns, supplemented by a new checklist of Iowa species and a description of Iowa habitats.
From robins nesting on window ledges to short-eared owls sailing low over snowy fields, pied-billed grebes diving for fish to catbirds singing on moonlit nights, Black introduces us to the birds of field and forest, prairie and pond. Whether describing red-breasted nuthatches gorging on suet at her feeder after a snowstorm or a flock of American goldfinches all balancing gracefully on ripening oats, she reminds us of the natural sights and sounds that we must appreciate and protect. Humorous, personal, engaging, and instructive, her essays provide a readily accessible body of information about Iowa's birdlife for both amateur and professional naturalist of every interest level.
By Gladys Black, Foreward by Dean M. Roosa, Introduction by Carl Kurtz, from the Bur Oak Books Series.

RESTORING THE TALLGRASS PRAIRIE An Illustrated Manual for Iowa and the Upper Midwest
$20.00
Iowa is the only state that lies entirely within the natural region of the tallgrass prairie. Early documents indicate that 95 percent of the state close to 30 million acres was covered by prairie vegetation at the time of Euro-American settlement. By 1930 the prairie sod had been almost totally converted to cropland; only about 30,000 acres of the original great green sea remained. Now, in this gracefully illustrated manual, Shirley Shirley has created a step-by-step guide to reconstructing the natural landscape of Iowa and the Upper Midwest.
Chapters on planning, obtaining and selecting plants and seeds, starting seeds indoors, preparing the site, planting, and maintenance set the stage for comprehensive species accounts. Shirley gives firsthand information on soil, moisture, sun, and pH requirements; location, size, and structure; blooming time and color; and propagation, germination, and harvesting for more than a hundred wildflowers and grasses.
Shirley's sketches all drawn from native plants and from seedlings that she grew herself will be valuable for even the most experienced gardener. While other books typically feature only the flowering plant, her careful drawings show the three stages of the seedlings, the flower, and the seedhead with seeds as well as the entire plant. This practical and attractive volume will help anyone dedicated to reconstructing the lost emerald growth of the historic tallgrass prairie.

SARAH'S SEASONS An Amish Diary and Conversation
$14.50
Have you ever kept a diary? With that question author Martha Davis sets out on her journey into the quietly remarkable life of an Old Order Amish woman know to us as Sarah Fisher. Sarah not only kept a diary but welcomed Martha to read it and to view the world through her eyes. The even, peaceful tenor of Sarah's diary entries and the closeness to nature of her life and work will make readers question the pace and values of their own lives, and the degree of social interconnectedness in Sarah's world will offer a model for many of us outside it.
Sarah's brief daily notations, recorded on a calendar throughout 1976 and 1977, reveal an ongoing account of her seasonal routine. In many ways the straightforward simplicity of her writing is a reflection of her life near rural Kalona, Iowa, a life filled with what Martha Davis calls look-easy tasks undertaken without the conveniences of electricity, phones, or automobiles. For Sarah, diaries are a record. A diary can settle a question, a disagreement, she tells Martha. You look back and see what took place. That's history.
Through their conversations, Martha soon discovered she had more in common with Sarah than diary writing. Though Davis lived in the mainstream culture, an English person as the Amish say, like Sarah she grew up on a farm in rural Iowa during the 1950s and 1960s. Like Martha, Sarah had spent several years as a teacher.
In Sarah's Seasons Martha Davis shares their common experiences and common interests gardening, quilting, and cooking. Alongside Sarah's diary, Martha presents their shared recipes and conversations as well as reflections on her own more modern existence. Because of her friendship with Sarah, the author found a new sense of belonging to and purpose in the mainstream world. In the end, Sarah's diary becomes for Martha a meditation on time and community.
Martha Davis is a high school English teacher who lives in Des Moines, Iowa.
